Message the amount of "volume" (not surface area) im not sure when, if ever, air flow was measured in surface area, through one MAF. Seeing as how one MAF can only read high enough to support ~500hp safely.
They then add a second MAF, not to increase "surface area" but to balance the restriction in the intake so the ecu can accuratly measure exactly half of the air being drawin into the intake system, doubleing its air metering capacity while decreasing restriction.
